THE ‘DARK’ CONTINENT
Africa is said to be a continent of darkness and desolation…………It is described as a habitation of deep gloom of vast proportions. A dark continent of intellectual emptiness with no enlightenment or recorded history.
Starting from the deep and impenetrable rain forests with its deep foliage in the south to the hot and arid expanse of the Sahara desert in the north, its interiors have held deep secrets and promised treasures unknown.
It is widely acknowledged that human migration to the rest of the world started from Africa known as the ‘Out of Africa’ theory. This suggests that Africa had a prominent landmark in ancient history. The earliest human remains have been found at the Omo Kibish Formation, near the Ethiopian Kibish Mountains in Ethiopia.
Indeed, one of the earliest kingdoms in the ancient world was Kemet (among its other names) which means Black Land. The Greeks gave Kemet the name Aegyptos which is now widely and famously translated as Egypt.
There were also Nubian Kingdoms of Kerma and Kush. Prominent African Empires in the 2nd millennia were the Kanem, Axum, Songhai, Mali, Ghana, Ọ̀yọ́, Benin, Bornu, Ashanti and famous kingdoms were the Zulu, Kongo, Dahomey and Sokoto Caliphate.
